Single medal for swim

by Emoni Narawa

THE Fiji Swimming team returned home with a medal after a tough competition at the New Caledonia National Swimming Championship over the weekend.

National swimming rep Tieri Erasito won Fiji's only bronze medal in the 200m butterfly in the women's U17 grade and also broke a national record with a new time of 2:39.21 minutes.

Erasito failed to win a medal in the 100m butterfly on day two.

However, the teenager pulled the trigger to bag Fiji's only medal against countries like France, New Caledonia and Tahiti.

Fiji's other representative Matelita Buadromo was placed fourth in the final of the 200m Breaststroke.

She swam a big personal best time of 3:05.95 in the event and just missed a podium placing.

Fiji Swimming president Dennis Miller was proud with the performance of the young national side.

"It's a good development trip for us. These young swimmers were exposed to a very tough competition with some making their first international trip," he said.

"Some of them make it to the finals and to return with a medal is a big achievement from this group of young swimmers."

Fiji is building up for the 2011 Pacific Games.

The side has always faced a tough competition from the likes of New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea.
