Rotuma Wins Gold In Beach Volleyball

Rotuma took out the men's gold medal in the Beach Volleyball beating Taveuni two sets to one in the Fiji Games today.

It was a tough competition under the hot sun but Rotuma 1 managed to win 21-14 and 21-18 in both sets against Taveuni.

Rotuma 1 rep Fuata Sikiti won his first ever gold medal since he first started playing beach volleyball in 2007.

Sikiti said beach volleyball has been the one sport that he loves and despite only recently finding his partner Sawelio Tamani to play with, he has enjoyed the Fiji Games.

"It is such an awesome feeling and this is the first time that I have actually won a medal because I have been taking part in Beach Volleyball since 2007," Sikiti said.

"I have represented Fiji in the Oceania Games in 2007 in Samoa and 2008 in Tonga and I did not manage to win a medal.

"Last year, I recently moved back to Suva for work and I made it my business to play Beach Volleyball again because I love it.

"The reason I love beach volleyball is because it only features two people and it is easy to control yourself and your partner.

"The game plan and the strategy is easy to map out and follow so I am at my happiest when I am playing.

"It is always about team work and how much you have bonded with your partner. Three months ago, I had to get a new partner, I had to get to know how he plays and I needed to know that we could actually blend together.
